RE: Camping in Texas?

Oh, I know about the BBQ. :) I did experience that one time when I was in Grapevine. Right now we're looking at the Round Rock area. Actually spoke with a realtor last night and have plans to go down there around Columbus day for a week or so to look around and feel things out. DW job is in Austin so we need to be right around that area. One other thing I've got to look into is parking regulations for RV's and if you can have them on your property and what not. I'm hoping not to move down into one of the cookie cutter neighborhoods because I doubt they would allow it. Any one have any ideas around that? Is that common down in that area?

RE: Camping in Texas?

Don’t worry about the heat. Moved here from IL 35 years ago, now I can’t stand the cold. Right now I am freezing in MI and it is 55 outside. I am anxious to get back to warm weather. Camping there is great year around, just pick the type of geography you want to see and go. So exactly how hot does it get? And is it humid like in the northeast? I mean 105 is 105 dry or not. That's a hot heat, but is it walk outside and wilt type of heat?

RE: Camping in Texas?

So I'd have to substitue ya'll for you guys? :) I don't know about that one. Up here, everything is 20 minutes away it seems except for Boston and New York. Those are 2 hours. :) It would be nice to be where it isn't so hectic all the time. We were on vacation a few weeks back up in Vermont for two weeks and I couldn't believe how laid back people were on the roads. It was great! You could feel the stress build once you crossed the Mass line and the speeders came on. If Texas is like that, there's one more plus in the column. I can definitely feel the pride that you guys...I mean ya'll :) have in your state. Don't see that too often.

RE: Camping in Texas?

Wow, thanks for all the great responses. My parents said that folks were a lot friendlier down there and I can certainly see that. I've been to Dallas and Grapevine 4 or 5 times so that's been pretty much my exposure to Texas. It was always for work so I didn't really have time to get out and see the sites. My wife and I are flying down in October to take a look around and I'm hoping to check out a few campgrounds as well. She definitely wants a pool. She wants one up here, but I can't justify the cost considering we camp and we'd only be able to use it a few months of the year. I just can't imagine winter without freezing my butt off, loading the stove, and shoveling. That would be a big adjustment.

RE: Camping in Texas?

You really dont want a pontoon boat to fish Tx lakes. I would suggest a fish n ski which gives you a good family boat for water sports, and a good boat for fishing at the same time. Tx has some truly world class bass fishing, but in a pontoon boat, you would be quite limited. Keeping in mind that the most convienient times of the year for your family to camp may end up being in the summer, you might move a second ac to the top of your wish list. In temps above 95 or so, you may find that one ac wont keep you cool enough. The longer you live in TX you body with aclimate to higher temps, but expect your first summer to be surprisingly hot. After a few years, you will begin to feel like the most texans,,40 degrees and its down right cold. Yeah, I have no idea about boats. I've never owned one and will be the first to admit that I know zero about boats short of putting on a life jacket. :) I just thought pontoon boats looked fun. The heat, I'm a little worried about wilting down there. I've got the thick northern blood in me where as soon as it hits 40 degrees the shorts come out. :) Heck, today was 65 degrees when I got home and it was beautiful...so I'm a bit nervous there.

RE: Camping in Texas?

See, these are all the things we get excited about. The only other place I've lived that I remember is upstate NY which..well, I won't go there. :) I keep hearing great things about the area and we're pretty excited about being able to live in another part of the country, meet new people, and give the kids possibly more opportunity than they have right now. Just tough leaving the rest of the family. Fishing, I keep telling the wife I want a pontoon boat but I think she'd hurt me. :)

Camping in Texas?

Okay, so my wife and I are faced with with the opportunity of relocating to the Austin area from Connecticut and one of the MANY considerations is the camping down south. Right now up here the season is about April 15th to October 10th or so. I'm assuming that the camping season is longer if not year around down there? Also, what are the campgrounds like? Are there a lot around? I'm trying to explain to her that we'll probably get more use because we would probably just avoid camping in the "burst into flames" time of year of July/Aug but we could then camp all winter long! Any advice or insight is appreciated. Thanks!

RE: Slide-out awning cover

Fantastic avan, thanks for the input. Sounds like I'll just leave it be. Typically what I've done to get the water off is before breaking down I jack the front of the camper and it runs off.

RE: Slide-out awning cover

Mine does the same thing. It is a Carefree of Colorado. Would not be my first choice if I were to get another one. That's the same that I have. They were on the camper when I bought it so I didn't really think about it. Any issues with it doing that?

Slide-out awning cover

I'm trying to figure out if I have an issue or not here. I have awnings over both of my slides and the one over the larger slide always accumulates water during a rain storm. Is this normal or is there anything I should do about this? I don't seem to be getting water outside, but I want to make sure this isn't going to cause and problems.

RE: Vehicle Prices

There's a little more mark-up than that. A 45K Burb could be discounted fairly easily to 40k,and more if there not selling good, plus all the current incentives at the time. You are right I was just guessing from home but here are actual figures MSRP $45,590 dealer invoice $42,557 supplier price $42,170 GM employee $40,360 total mark up $3,033 and you know no one ever pays sticker so just how much do you think they are making? If the dealer is trying to beat another dealer ( all the time ) that mark up is usually gone. There has to be more mark up than that in a Suburban. I have a deal through my employer where we're able to get Toyotas through a dealer at $100 over actual invoice. We purchased a Camry Hybrid and the sticker was around $31k, they showed us the invoice from Toyota and we got it for $25,2xx. That's almost 20% off and I'm sure they were still making more than $100 on the deal. I'd be surprised if there's only 12% mark up on a Suburban. There was just a special on tv the other night about how the trucks and big truck based suv's were cash cows because of the mark up.

RE: Gotta change "the valve"

Gloves...check, face sheild....check, six pack....check. I tackled it this weekend and it was a little more of a project than I planned for. The valve was sandwiched between the two tanks so it was a complete PITA to get it out and even more fun to get the new one in. I had to get 1/2" of play out the tanks to get the valve in. Took about an hour trying different positions and different tools to get leverage to spread everything enough but I finally got it in there. Turns out it was tissue packed in the gate.

RE: 6.0 PSD Owners only please

05 F-350 SRW Crew Cab Long Bed, I get about 15-16 around town depending on the stop and go, highway up around 18ish. Towing around 10mpg, but this is mostly back road, hilly terrain. Definitely found that the amount of stop and go traffic you have in town will play HUGE with your milage. I've been down in the 11-12 range if I hit a lot of lights or traffic.

RE: First trip was great.....until

I told my buddy that as long as they didnt start shooting guns I could stick it out for one more night. Well guess what happened next? Yup, BANG BANG BANG. I was so pissed. We had our small children with us and there were 10-15 small children with the bangers. Wha.....? I don't even know what to say. I guess I'm a little sheltered up here in CT. Sorry to hear about your experience man.

RE: Park The Pickup

Drill anything in the side at 60mph like that first video and you're likely in trouble. Personally I had an offset t-bone(other driver came in at about 75 degrees instead of 90 degrees) by a drunk driver on the driver's side with my 95 Saturn SC2 at 40 mph and I walked away. He was driving a late 80's GMC 2500 pickup. That impact sent me across two lanes, through a sign pole, and airborne into a field. I had a concussion, small cut on my head, and a VERY stiff neck, but still walked to the ambulance. My point, there are a million different variables when it comes to accidents and the crash tests are a very specific set of circumstances. When it's your time, it's your time. You're meeting your maker, doesn't matter what you're driving. Who's to say you don't have a low speed collision in a truck or an avoidance maneuver and roll it? You never know. Drive the best you can and hope that other drivers are too.

RE: Gotta change "the valve"

I am afraid I second the hazmat suit idea. My blacktank valve has to be in one of the worlds worst positions as a grey tank and black tank piping 'Y' together with the valve in between the tanks so there is no give in the pipe to drop the valve. Lets just say it was not a pretty scene, but once it is over with the trauma recedes fairly quickly. :B Great, sounds like my set up. I have both valves to a Y and then about a 6' run of pipe to the cap.

RE: Park The Pickup

I picked up a grand am for $1500 and run that back and forth to work. Plus we dumped my wife's SUV for a hybrid. Cut our fuel bill by about 70%. Did you factor-in your Hybrid car payment? ;) We're actually saving more in fuel per month than the car payment so we're still ahead. That's the scary part. I couldn't believe how much fuel we were using. She was getting 13 mpg, I was getting 12 mpg on diesel. Now she's around 40mpg and I'm at 27mpg. We both run about 250-280 miles/week.
